“What are some essential jazz records I’d like?” I’ve been asked this question so many times, and there really isn’t a decent answer–for many reasons. Everyone’s tastes are different, and I hate best-of shootouts when it comes to art. But there, nevertheless, a bunch of records I think everyone should at least hear. And there are a bunch of records that are so immediately enjoyable, they’re accessible to the new listener. Also, putting together such a list based on what’s in print at any given time is difficult. I’m using Amazon links, because they’re easy and ubiquitous. Enjoy!

John Coltane: Crescent

Duke Ellington and John Coltrane

Bill Evans: Waltz for Debby

Charlie Parker: Charlie Parker with Strings

Miles Davis: Someday My Prince Will Come

Charles Mingus: Mingus Mingus Mingus Mingus
